Why does a child sometimes make the same small “careless mistake” in arithmetic even when they know the method—a missed carry, an incorrect borrow, a copied digit, or a skipped step?

Primary 3 and Primary 4 children are invited to take part in an HKSYU Master’s research study, Working Memory and Attention Errors in Arithmetic (research approval code: PSY509_25P510M_CCYJ_2026). This is not a school examination or an intelligence test. The study explores why small but repeated errors may appear during familiar column-form addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The online session takes approximately 38 minutes and includes two short number activities followed by column-form arithmetic. There are no word problems and no separate Chinese and English arithmetic sets. Registration and parental consent are required; the activities and analysis use a participant code. Names, schools and identifying details will not appear in research reports.

Participation is voluntary.
